Wicker is hard woven fiber formed into a rigid material, and is usually used for baskets or furniture. Wicker is often made of material of plant origin, but plastic fibers can also be used. Baskets made of wicker were found in ancient Pompeii. It is more popular than ever today!

Materials used may be any part of a plant, such as the cores or canes of rattan stalks, or whole thicknesses of plants, as with willow switches. Other popular materials include reed and bamboo.

The frame of the furniture  is made of stiffer materials, after which more pliant material is used to fill in the frame. Wicker is light but still very sturdy, making it suitable for furniture that will be moved often. It is used both in and outside the house, and is popular for accessorizing bathrooms .

Wicker makes an inexpensive but darling little girl’s room when sprayed in white or a light pastel.  Some colorful cushions on the chairs, a few stuffed animals and dolls on the shelves and a little bedside lamp on the wicker night stand, and you have a wonderful and indestructible setting you’re your princess!

Even though wicker is not technically  perfect for outdoor use, it is very frequently found on porches and patios.  Because it is so light weight, it blows over easily in the wind.  The sun can also dry it out and make it brittle. If your outdoor furniture gets too dirty, you can hose it down, shake off excess water, and let it dry thoroughly in the sun.
