Storage Trunks
As the name suggests, storage trunks were made for keeping luggage or in simple words for storing one’s belongings in. With changing time needs witnessed transitions too and therefore, we now see suitcases.
There are still uses related to the trunks in terms of storing belongings in. The shapes and number of compartments determine how spacious a trunk is for this very purpose. They have many product types and classifications when we talk about their variations.
Consequently, there has been great availability in the market for wardrobe trunks, dresser trunks, dome top trunks, cabin trunks and so on and so forth.
Dresser trunks have been known most commonly from the early twentieth century. They have proper drawers and lids and when opened they completely open up till the front section. They are characteristic of huge sizes and fetch a very lucrative price when in proper restored condition.
On the other hand, old fashioned wardrobe trunks have spaces for almost anything and any use imagined. They have a separate side of drawers and that for arranging clothes. Moreover, spaces allotted can go to as specific uses as make up boxes and shoes placement. These trunks were originally designed and made to be useful for long journeys such as by trains or even for longer duration by train. One good thing about wardrobe trunks was that many used to have detachable and adjustable suitcases.
Wall trunks have their names derived from the way they open up. These could be opened with the lid being flat and against the wall in an erect position.
Similarly, the mid nineteenth century witnessed the time of the renowned ‘Dome Toped Trunk’ which has a curved lid found to be of heights up to 30 inches. Their popularity derives from the fact that they are now thought to be a vintage and a very unique item not easily found in the market of trunk sellers. They are therefore sold as antiques thus being of great value.
Moreover, the ‘Oak Slat Trunk’ was thought to be one of the most precious items possessed by a Victorian, therefore, they were also thought to be one of those most professionally made.
As we go back into history, we get to know that storage trunks got popular in the mid and late 1700’s, when an ease of carrying luggage while travelling was to be derived. The answer came in the form of such trunks being made. They used to be made of the finest wood quality with the outer covering being made of hides of cow, deer and even horse. These had an ornamented look due to brass nails and iron locks that made up an entire handmade trunk. Some of them used to be lined with old newspaper or any printed paper would do.
Some storage trunks were attributed to the use by specifically one gender, for instance, small trunks got to be known as ‘Ladies’ Trunks’ due to their small sizes and light weighted appearance. By 1850’s trunks that were made got to be known as ‘Gold Rush Trunks’, or ‘Stage Coach Trunks’ due to brass buttons and big brass studs.
No matter what the era or how rapidly time passes, the purpose of carrying luggage has witnessed evolution in terms of what it is being carried into. Thus, if trunks are no more used for this purpose, they are now being cherished as antique items.
