Cast-iron is three times heavier than cast aluminum, and this term extruded refers to soft aluminum or resin that is pushed through an opening to form a solid shapable tube. When it comes to wooden patio furniture, most is made from plantation-grown wood which designates such woods as jarrah, teak and balau. This type of wood is grown in controlled, plantation environments to minimize the effect on the world’s resources. Most patio furniture today comes powder coated. This is a baked- on, powder finish that forms a plastic skin which virtually bonds to the metal and is six times thicker than paint. The resin- like tubes that make up the lightweight frames of some tables and chairs are made from tubular resin or PVC. Kids lounge chairs are usually lightweight, and you’ll find most are made from this product. Resin is a molded polypropylene or plastic that is chemically treated for colorfastness, fade resistance, and to enhance strength.

One wood common in southeast Asia is rattan. It is a solid wood vine that is stripped of its bark, steamed, and bent into furniture shapes. Known as peel cane, its bark is used to wrap the joints or is woven into seats of chairs or chair backs. You’ll find a material, sometimes referred to as tubular construction, which is simply an aluminum or steel frame that is made into hollow tubes and is very light-weight. And of course, there’s the traditional wrought iron which is essentially solid, half-inch, round bars of iron that are forged into detailed and intricate designs. And lastly, one very important patio furniture component is wicker, which is commonly found in chair construction. This is simply a technique that is used to weave long, pliant strips of almost any plant material, but most often this reed comes from the core of the rattan pole. You’ll find some synthetics such as vinyl, fiberglass, and extruded resin which are referred to as wicker since the designation refers to the technique and not the material. Often using aluminum frames, all-weather wicker will be made with a synthetic or natural substance. Remember to check your warranty over carefully, as it may come with limitations for continuous outdoor use.
