How can you patch up or fix a leather chair with a hole?
A co-worker of mine was saying her pet rat got out of his cage and now has two holes in her leather chair that he chewed up. She wasn’t sure how to fix or patch up that? Does anyone know what to do? Thanks!
I am not sure about a leather chair but I have seen leather shoes patched.
Skiving is the process of cutting the leather in a taper so that the thickness goes from normal to very thin. It is done with a very sharp knife or on some special machines. It can also be sanded this way.
On a shoe new material is used. On a chair you would probably be able to find some extra fabric.
The process is to make a round patch with skived edges. The hole is cut to match with opposite skived edges and the two are glued together. On a chair it would be possible to install a backer patch as well. On a shoe such a patch would also have to be skived or you would feel it.
The glue used is contact cement, but hot melt is also possible. The patch will have to be hammered into place so either the fabric has to be removed or something slipped behind to act as an anvil. (something to strike against.)
With the right finish a patch can become nearly invisible.
